Tracking Weather Storms Using 3D Doppler Radial Velocity Information

چکیده
3D Doppler Radar is a key forecasting tool for severe weather storms and automatic tracking of these deformable objects is of great interest to meteorologists. Currently, we use the notion of a 3D ellipsoid to represent the uncertainty of a storm’s 3D center in the Doppler precipitation data and have described elsewhere an algebra for its use in storm tracking. In this paper, we describe how we use 3D velocity data computed by an iterative 3D least squares/regularization algorithm to construct a velocity compatibility function that uses a prediction/verification calculation to rate the “goodness” of potential storm matches. We also use the hypothesis that the orientation of matched storms should change smoothly to obtain improved matching.

Storm Tracking in Doppler Radar
An automated tracking algorithm for doppler radar storms is presented. Potential storms in Doppler radar images are hypothesized as regions of high water density (high intensity in the radar images) using a merge-and-split region growing algorithm. Potential storms are veriied by a relaxation labelling scheme that attempts to nds the best tracks based on spatio-temporal storm consistency. Tempo...
متن کامل3D velocity from 3D Doppler radial velocity
We present local least squares and regularization frameworks for computing 3D velocity (3D optical flow) from 3D radial velocity measured by a Doppler radar. We demonstrate the performance of our algorithms quantitatively on synthetic radial velocity data and qualitatively on real radial velocity data, obtained from the Doppler radar at Kurnell Radar station, Botany Bay, New South Wales, Austra...

We describe an automatic storm-tracking system to help Doppler radar system to detect severe storms such as thunderwith the forecasting of severe storms. In this article, we present the storms and tornadoes. The Doppler radar generates intensity and concepts of fuzzy point, fuzzy vector, fuzzy length of a fuzzy vector, radial velocity images, examples of which are shown in Figures and fuzzy ang...
متن کاملAssimilation of T-TREC-retrieved wind data with WRF 3DVAR for the short-term forecasting of typhoon Meranti (2010) near landfall
[1] An extended Tracking Radar Echo by Correlation (TREC) technique, called T-TREC technique, has been developed recently to retrieve horizontal circulations within tropical cyclones (TCs) from single Doppler radar reflectivity (Z) and radial velocity (Vr, when available) data. This study explores, for the first time, the assimilation of T-TREC-retrieved winds for a landfalling typhoon, Meranti...
متن کاملA Real-Time, Three-Dimensional, Rapidly Updating, Heterogeneous Radar Merger Technique for Reflectivity, Velocity, and Derived Products
With the advent of real-time streaming data from various radar networks, including most Weather Surveillance Radars-1988 Doppler and several Terminal Doppler Weather Radars, it is now possible to combine data in real time to form 3D multiple-radar grids. Herein, a technique for taking the base radar data (reflectivity and radial velocity) and derived products from multiple radars and combining ...
